A day with the incredible Ms. and Mr. Fix-It | MasterClass part 1 | generously sponsored by

What (and who!?) stops your organization from raising more money?

That big hairy problem you're facing as a fundraiser? Most experienced fundraisers have faced the same or similar issue. BUT our profession has not done a great job at getting to the root of these problems and fixing them once and for all.

That’s why WCFC has brought together two of the finest minds (and active practitioners!) for this one-of-a-kind MasterClass to help you clear your highest hurdle!

Whether it's a carefully calibrated tweak, a smashing blow from a caveman's club, or something in between, Ms. and Mr. Fix-It will guide you through your obstacles and deliver you to the promised land of effective, efficient and essential fundraising.

We’ll focus on loyalty, the Holy Grail of any business. Things like: Your relationship-building plan…donor-centered communications and extraordinary experiences…engaging board members and other staff in this work.

You'll appreciate Ms. and Mr. Fix-it's super-power to instantly view your issue from on the ground or 35,000 feet or anywhere in between.

Your superheroes will address some questions as a full group. And some issues will get more personal attention, so come prepared to work in small groups led by Tom and Simone as you solve persistent and pernicious problems in our sector.

And as our gurus move from group to group, you can expect the answer to the most vexing issues in your work when you send us a "tough stuff" email in advance.

Let’s Fix Some Universal Fundraising Stuff...then go home and do it!

P.S. Bring your top fundraising problems to this all-day session with Simone and Tom. Better yet, email your tough stuff to spjoyaux@aol.com no later than April 13, 2020. Please make your subject line: “Ms. and Mr. Fix-It”.

NB: Registrants should bring a laptop or a tablet.

Opening Keynote: Reconcilliation and Canada's fundraising sector | generously sponsored by

Sharon Redsky, an AFP Inclusive Giving Fellow and development coordinator with Dakota Ojibway Child and Family Services, will guide us through Truth and Reconciliation and what it means for the philanthropic sector.

Together, we'll take a deep dive into the most important elements of Truth and Reconciliation, learn how the principles of Truth and Reconciliation relate to our sector and discover how fundraisers and philanthropists can respond to the Call To Action.

Since bringing people together, listening and dialogue are critical components of the Truth and Reconciliation process, this opening plenary will encourage audience participation throughout as we ask questions, listen to each other and contemplate one of Canada's and our profession's largest issues.

You'll leave with an understanding of:
  • How our sector can recognise Indigenous voices and values
  • How we can build capacity for the Indigenous community to become part of the sector
  • The Philanthropic Community's Declaration of Action and how to incorporate into our work

B1-1: The Big (little) Diff: Writing for Digital | generously sponsored by

The digital realm is different in key ways. It can move and speak (video can deliver donors to the front lines). It's action-oriented: people LOVE to click; they seldom read.

As giving increasingly shifts online, what are today's best practices in an ever- evolving world? Turns out: old school. Offers. Great headlines. Donor-centricity. The same skills you needed for print.

Covered in the session: the real purpose of email (it's not reading); how to write subject lines that grab higher
opening rates; building a "family of purpose" (a movement) online through social media; warm vs. cold website giving pages; choosing content for Facebook posts; and why you need "sad" to sell "hope" ... and how to find "your special sad."

This overview of writing examines how a small animal welfare charity in Bangkok, Thailand, can now raise $350,000 every month in donations from American women 45 and older ... using Facebook alone. (Maybe you can do it, too!)

B1-2: It’s not all about you: Breaking down silos to make your organization more donor-centric | generously sponsored by

Donors today have more choice than ever. From an endless number of choices on Netflix and Amazon, to a seemingly endless number of charities which they could support. Yet, many non-profit organizations still seem intent on flagging donors for certain programs, and putting up silos between different departments/channels. This does not create the ideal donor experience, and can lead to them supporting another cause (or just buying that thing on Amazon they were debating).

Join Jas and Ryan as they help you break down silos in your organization and grow all areas of your fundraising program. They’ll provide you with specific strategies to improve your fundraising integration through your events, annual giving, online, monthly, and legacy giving programs.

C1-1: Tough Talk…Tougher Talk…Toughest Talk: About boards and that thing called governance | generously sponsored by

Prepare yourself. Brace yourself. WCFC is unleashing Simone Joyaux and she’s down for some TOUGH TALK. This crucial clinic is not for the faint-of-heart philanthropy fraidy-cats. There will be ranting. There will be raving. There will be uncomfortable looks and conversations. And there will be a plethora of wild rings.

Simone says it best:

What’s this workshop about? Fixing the mess where there’s mess!
Are you ready?
Because I usually start with shock and awe. Then a deep breath and I move into principles and practice and body of knowledge.
But shock and awe is always just a breath away. Why? Because of mediocrity and dysfunction and even scandal rampant in the serious business of boards and governance.
Sector credibility is still lower than it used to be. That means less credibility with people in your community, surely with your prospects, and maybe with your donors, too. And unfortunately, our boards and governance aren’t improving.
Who knows what’s next? But you and your board should be worried, really worried.

Who should attend this workshop? Several people.
Executive directors must be highly knowledgeable about governance – and must enable it well. Fundraisers must understand governance.
And it sure would be great if some board members actually learned about governance. However, remember this! Just because you’ve served on boards doesn’t mean you actually know what you’re doing. Remember all that mediocrity, dysfunction, and scandal mentioned above?!

Attend this workshop. But only if …
You’ve got the guts to challenge yourself and your board. Come along if you’re willing to question the status quo.

Be prepared for really tough talk. Lots of ranting and raving. All accompanied by my biggest and weirdest rings, for extra emphasis!

With 1 in 5 Canadians living in a rural setting, this donor base represents a huge potential new funding source for charities of all sizes. For these donors, philanthropic values and social challenges in small towns can differ drastically from big city settings.

In this session we will look at how industry trends and best-practices can be tailored for success connecting with rural donors, for both small and large fundraising organizations. We will examine key differences in rural vs urban fundraising, and how fundraisers can connect with the heart of the small town donor.

The Fundraising Comedy Hour | generously sponsored by

Time for a left turn from Breakouts, Clinics and Keynotes.

Kick off the afternoon with a WCFC true to nonconform-form plenary, Fundraising Comedy Hour.

You’ll laugh. You’ll cry. You’ll cry from laughing.

But most of all you’ll learn. A lot.

Sam Laprade, the phenom of philanthropic funny will guide us through 4 screamingly hilarious stories from her own personal experience:
  • The emotional day in the park with a lawyer, the remains of a bequest donor and some final wishes.
  • A millionaire walks into the homeless shelter
  • How an emotional fundraising letter almost won the day with a reluctant bishop.
  • Careful when you pull that thread: Sam’s winding and twisted road from radio, to the mayor’s office to an inner city mission to international fundraising superstar
Sam’s deeply personal session will highlight the most central tenets of successful fundraising:Donor relationships
  • Mission-driven fundraising
  • Putting emotion and humanity at the centre of all fundraising
  • How to build a career that suits your strengths and ambitions, no matter how unconventional or non-linear.
  • Invest and believe in yourself and reap the rewards

You’ll learn:
  • The most effective way to create genuine, immediate and lasting bonds with donors
  • Why your organisation’s mission must always be front and centre
  • Why emotion trumps logic – always
  • Overcoming impostor syndrome and building a successful and authentic fundraising career that works for you
  • self-care for fundraisers

*Make sure to bring a little cash with you, since we’ll keep up the WCFC tradition of raising money for a local charity with a friendly competition and a 'pass-the-hat' donation.

B3-1: Gen X: The Missing Middle | generously sponsored by

The last article you read about generational differences in giving probably mentioned Boomers and Millennials—and said nothing about Gen X. But in a few years Gen X will be the new Boomers. Soon, we’ll have to start tailoring our campaigns—our language, our images, our call-to-action—to speak to things GenXers care about, and not their parents. What are the differences in what appeals to Gen X, and what doesn’t? What channels does Gen X prefer, and how do they give? How can you position your charity and your asks to be ready for this change in generational patterns? Get ready for the new Boomers with this in-depth review plus tactics you can start using today.

Learning outcomes:
-understanding of Gen X patterns and difference in giving
-how to tailor fundraising to Gen X preferences
-how to prepare for the new wave of Gen X donors

B3-3: Goodbye e-blasts, hello personalized emails | generously sponsored by

Let’s face it, no one wants more emails in their inbox.

But as a fundraiser who understands the importance of digital prospects for your annual or monthly giving program, you know that emails are critical for cultivation and stewardship. There’s pressure from the top to continue growing your email revenue in a highly competitive online space. Deep down, you know that a monthly e-newsletter just won’t cut it anymore — but you’re not quite sure how to keep your donors clicking, reading and giving.

Fortunately, there are savvy charities in your midst that are taking steps to update their branded templates, formal narrative structure and impersonal calls to action — and seeing great results.
This session will showcase easy-to-implement changes you can make to your email strategy tomorrow, including new template formats, updated authentication practices, alternative narrative formats, and quick A/B tests to further improve email performance.

Learning outcomes
  • -  Understand why branded templates and impersonal tones of voice distract from the core elements of your email communications.
  • -  Learn how to avoid that dreaded ‘unsubscribe’ by making changes to your email template, subject line selection, tone of voice and sender name.
  • -  Explore how writing emails from a real sender — complete with their unique personality quirks, organizational priorities and puns — can improve email open and click-through rates.
  • -  Walk away with practical email tips, tricks and tests you can use to improve email results for all your advocacy, engagement and fundraising email needs.

Transforming ideas into action | generously sponsored by

Have you ever attended a conference, filled a book or laptop with notes and ideas, which then ended up on a shelf in your office to sit as urgent priorities took all your attention?

WCFC wants to ensure you maximize the value of your attendance, networking and learning and avoid 'potential-on-the-shelf' syndrome.

At the apex of this year's celebration of our profession, this Day 2 closing plenary is a guided soft-landing for you, to ensure you have the tools to put your new knowledge into action.

Sam Laprade will take us through strategic look at how to apply your learnings from WCFC and boost your fundraising program's -- and organisation's -- effectiveness and efficiency as soon as you walk back in the door to your office.

Come prepared to share and accept a personal goal challenge.
